What do they mean and why are they important?

What does all this alphabet soup mean to you? When you see initials like these behind a REALTOR®'s name, it means they are a committed professional, not content just to take the courses needed to get and maintain a real estate license, but determined to improve his or her professional skills. They have devoted time to attending advanced educational courses and taking examinations to earn these designations.

Below is a list of the most common designations and what they mean:

ABR - The Accredited Buyer’s Representative

The ABR designation is designed for real estate buyer agents who focus on working directly with buyer-clients at every stage of the home-buying process. An ABR Has a thorough understanding of the home buying process.

ABRM - The Accredited Buyer Representative Manager

The ABRM designation is geared toward brokers, owners and managers who wish to incorporate buyer representation into their daily practice. Those who have earned the ABRM designation have overseen a minimum of 25 real estate transactions involving a buyer agent or have had more than two years of experience in the oversight of buyer representatives.

CDPE - The Certified Distressed Property Expert®

A CDPE has a thorough understanding of complex issues in today’s turbulent real estate industry and knowledge of foreclosure avoidance options available to homeowners. CDPEs can provide solutions, specifically short sales, for homeowners facing market hardships.

CIPS - Certified International Property Specialist

The CIPS Designation is the only designation of its kind in the real estate community. It's synonymous with advanced expertise, a global perspective and distinct understanding of a global buyer, and comes with powerful brand recognition with designees in nearly 40 countries.

CLHMS - Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist

Recognized as the mark of accomplishment in luxury markets around the world, the Certified Luxury Home Marketing Specialist (CLHMS) designation assures affluent buyers and sellers that the agents who have earned it have the knowledge, experience, competence, and confidence they require.

CNS - Certified Neighborhood Specialist

A Certified Neighborhood Specialist is a real estate professional that has been certified by the Council of Neighborhood Specialists as an expert in a particular neighborhood. Those professionals bearing the CNS designation have proven their knowledge of a particular neighborhood.

CPM - Certified Property Managers®

Certified Property Managers® are recognized as experts in real estate management, and they are at the top of the profession. 70% of those who hold the CPM® designation hold the highest management positions in their offices (owner/partner/officer/director).

CRB - Certified Real Estate Brokerage Manager

The CRB Manager is one of the most respected and relevant designations offered in real estate business management and is awarded to REALTORS® who have completed advanced educational and professional requirements. CRB Designees are better positioned to streamline operations, integrate new technology and apply new trends and business strategies.

CRP - Certified Relocation Professional

The Certified Relocation Professional designation is awarded by the Employee Relocation Council (ERC). In order to obtain the CRP designation, an individual must pass a comprehensive exam that covers relocation issues related to corporate policies, appraising, real estate, legal considerations, and family concerns. Only those relocation professionals who have demonstrated a minimum of two years' experience dealing with relocation issues are allowed to sit for the exam. Industry professionals who have earned the CRP designation are dedicated to expanding their knowledge in order to provide the utmost in service and quality to today's transferees and their employers.

CRS - Certified Residential Specialist

Certified Residential Specialist - the "master's degree of real estate". Every CRS Designee must have a proven track record in the business, as well as advanced education in related areas like finance, technology and marketing. The training available to CRS Designees includes a strong focus on technology and its applications in the real estate business. Awarded by the Residential Sales Council.

CRE - Counselor of Real Estate™

The Counselors of Real Estate®  is an international group of recognized professionals who provide seasoned, expert, objective advice on real property and land-related matters. Only 1,100 practitioners throughout the world carry the CRE® designation. Membership is by invitation only.

e-Pro

ePro is a new certification first offered in 2000 by the National Association of Realtors®. It is a comprehensive Internet certification program for real estate professionals. e-PRO holders have completed a course covering fundamentals of doing business online, ways of creating and maintaining online relationships, web marketing ethical and legal issues, and ways to adapt to new ways of doing business online.

REALTORS® with the GRI designation have in-depth training in legal and regulatory issues, technology, professional standards, and the sales process. Earning the designation is a way to stand out to prospective buyers and sellers as a professional with expertise in these areas.

This certification is designed for REALTORS® who facilitate the buying, selling, or management of properties for investment, development, retirement, or second homes in a resort, recreational and/or vacation destination are involved in this market niche.

SRS - Seller Representative Specialist

The Seller Representative Specialist designation is the premier credential in seller representation. It is designed to elevate professional standards and enhance personal performance. SFR - Short Sales & Foreclosure Resource®

The SFR® certification  teaches real estate professionals to work with distressed sellers and the finance, tax, and legal professionals who can help them, qualify sellers for short sales, develop a short sale package, negotiate with lenders, safeguard your commission, limit risk, and protect buyers.

TRC - Transnational Referral Certification

The Transnational Referral Certification course prepares real estate professionals to make and receive compensated referrals using the ICREA Transnational Referral System and integrate international referrals into their business plans. The course covers finding a referral partner, agreeing on compensation, meeting customer service standards, participating in the compensation dispute arbitration process, and using ICREA business tools.
